Thermoplastic Olefin (TPO)

Thermoplastic Olefin, better known as TPO, sheets are a blend of polypropylene and ethylene propylene polymers and usually are reinforced with polyester. TPO sheets contain colorant, flame retardants, UV absorbers and other proprietary substances to achieve desired physical properties. TPO membranes usually come in white or black.


Economical - One of the factors that makes TPO roofing attractive both in residential and commercial construction is its reasonable cost. TPO offers many of the same benefits as PVC roofing, such as hot-air weldable seams and energy efficiency, but at a lower cost.

Appearance & Effectiveness - TPO is available in white, light grey and black reflective color options. With new technology, you do not need to get a white roof to enjoy the energy saving and reflective properties. Latest technologies enable all colors of TPO roofing membranes to be UV resistant and “cool”.

Durability - In comparison to other thermoplastic membranes, TPO resists mold growth, dirt accumulation, tears, impact, and punctures. Reinforced TPO membranes can handle a building’s thermal expansion and contraction more effectively than other single ply roofing products.

Energy Efficient - The energy efficiency of TPO roofing membranes makes them highly attractive to building owners who want to have the benefits of savings on their ocooling costs as well as help the environment by reducing the carbon footprint. TPO’s membrane’s white reflective surface exceeds the EPA’s Energy Star® requirements and white, tan and gray are listed with the Cool Roof Rating Council.

Recyclable - One of the biggest advantages of the TPO membrane in a market that demands green building materials is that it is 100% recyclable.

Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Polymer (EPDM)

Thermoset membranes incorporate principal polymers that are chemically cross linked or cured. One characteristic of true thermoset polymers is once they are cured, they only can be bonded to similar materials with adhesives.

The most common thermoset roof membrane is EPDM. EPDM principally is composed of two compounds, ethylene and propylene, that are derived from oil and natural gas.

Contractors commonly call these membranes “rubber” roofs.

Environmentally Friendly

EPDM is one of the most sustainable and environmental materials used today in the construction industry. Its excellent performance transfers to low life cycle costs and less impact on the environment. The initial production of the membrane has a low embodied energy number (the amount of energy required to produce and implement a product from material extraction, manufacture, and installation). In addition several other components (such as cleaners, primers and adhesives) were developed for use with the EPDM membrane to reduce VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) emissions during installation. Post-industrial products can be reincorporated (recycled) into the manufacturing of other roofing products and accessories (i. e. , walkways and roofing tiles), thus minimizing the impact on landfills.

Longevity of EPDM

With many EPDM installations exceeding 40 years of exposure in the field under various climatic conditions, none of the material tested has shown alarming signs of degradation. Studies have shown aged EPDM membrane as having a potential life expectancy of 50 years.

Cost Effectiveness

Dollar-for-dollar, EPDM roofing systems are the greatest value in the low slope commercial roofing industry. While installation costs vary from system to system as well as from building to building, generally, ballasted roofing systems have the lowest installed cost per square foot followed by mechanically fastened and fully adhered systems.

Repairing it is Easy

One of the most unique attributes of EPDM is its ability to be easily repaired as well as its potential for restoration unparalleled in the roofing industry. The characteristics of the membrane are such that, even after years of field service and exposure to the elements, repairs and/or modifications, such as the installation of a new rooftop unit, can be accomplished with ease and with the expectation of long-term performance.

Two Methods of Installation of EPDM Roofing Systems

Mechanically Fastened

Mechanically attached systems can be installed using large panels and attached through the membrane, or using narrow panels attached in the side laps. The membrane is then attached using either round plates of batten strips to the underlying deck.

Fully Adhered

Fully adhered systems using panels measuring up to 30 feet by 100 feet. The membrane is bonded to the insulation, which has been physically attached, utilizing mechanical fasteners, stress plates and/or adhesives.

Benefits of PVC Roofing:

Durability - Offers a high chemical and fire resistance and resists damage that can be caused by rooftop foot traffic and construction. It is low-maintenance, easily weldable, and has exceptional seam strength. The fleece backing on PVC membrane offers additional puncture and tear resistance and acts as a built-in separation layer between the membrane and rough concrete decks or existing asphaltic based roofing systems.

Weather Resistance - PVC membrane offers excellent resistance to UV, ozone, and oxidation, as well as excellent low-temperature flexibility. The fleece backing on the PVC membrane offers excellent wind uplift resistance, resulting in high-performance systems that can stand up to tough weather conditions.

Energy Efficiency - PVC membrane roofing is environmentally friendly and can help reduce a building’s energy usage. The high reflectivity of this membrane helps lower operating costs by reducing air conditioning usage.
